Solar battery chargers come in a wide range and variety depending on the type of solar equipment they are designed for. Initially solar equipment were less mobile and their chargers were also designed to be fixed besides the solar equipment. As solar gadgets gain widespread use to include such items as cellular phones or small portable lamps, so have the chargers changed to become mobile for such uses. Solar chargers for home use come mainly in 6 and 12 voltage range though these can be combined variously to serve different requirements.

Solar battery chargers allow user access to power when and where conventional power supply sources may not be available or are not reliable. Solar battery chargers convert the solar power received from the solar panels into forms that can be stored like batteries for later use when the sun is not available or for use in such devices as mobile radios, computers, cell phones and other electronic devices. Travel solar battery chargers can charge small batteries including size AAA, AA, C and D rechargeable batteries. These are compact devices which are designed to be used at home or while traveling.

Solar battery chargers are also crucial for passive solar ventilation systems that are used during winters. There are automotive solar battery chargers which support solar car ventilators, radio receivers and other lighting requirements. In fact there have been successful attempts to build fully solar powered cars except that developing them for commercial uses have not seen much success. Probably when the car manufacturers will find formulas for incorporating solar battery chargers into the electric cars being produced today then solar batteries may improve the convenience of such vehicles.

Solar battery chargers are used for marine vessels such as yachts, fishing boats and trolling boats which spend a lot of time in open waters with unlimited access to solar power. They use solar battery chargers for air conditioning requirements and other lighting requirements while in the sea. These become very convenient and cheap sources of power for vessels which spend a lot of time in the water and may not be able to refuel regularly. Because the solar battery chargers are also light, their use reduces the loads marine vessels would have to contend with if they were to use fossil fuels for all their requirements.
